i borrowed a book today, titled Extreme Running. the introduction expresses long distance running in harsh terrain in a way i've always felt about it (with regards to pure distance running), but never could find the right words to describe it with. the author put it in a fluent and elegant way that will bring out all the right emotions in long-d runners. here it is, with respect to extreme running (running in harsh terrain and conditions):

As our day to day lives become more pressured and intense, it comes to no surprise that races such as these are proliferating. According to Sir Roger Bannister: "The more restricted our society and work becomes, the more necessary it will be to find some outlet for this craving for freedom."

People often ask what leads one to run 200km through a desert, over frozen glaciers and lakes or through remote humid tropical jungles. There are really two answers:

One is the almost spiritual nature of this type of quest. Extreme running forces a separation between mind and body. The ability to reach a level of meditation that permits a runner mentally to overcome extreme environmental factors and crippling physical exertion is key. The greater and more extreme the physical challenge, the more transcendental the experience. With this, can come a true sense of peace and escape from the everyday pressures of life.

The second answer is more base: it is the desire to succeed, to conquer, to overcome a seemingly impossible physical and mental challenge. The thrill of taking on such a mission, of believing in oneself to the necessary extent to succeed, is tantalizing. The self-confidence that many extreme runners possess is a necessary prerequisite to success. Without it, failure is almost inevitable. This is because these extremely difficuly physical and psychological feats serve to highlight the frailty of the human condition. Fear of failure in itself is a difficult thing to face and to beat. Yet, when self-belief is mirrored in success, the intangible rewards that result from having faced and conquered unexplorer areas of physical and mental consciousness, and having probed the limits of muscular endurance, are great.

incredible insight into the world of running, extreme or not.

anyway, been running regularly, propelled by my fear of dying at 10km during my sundown marathon, and my desire to attain a body i can be proud of, but currently more of the former. hopefully my motivation sustains itself through this one month. it's gonna take a hell lot of intense running to actually be ready for a marathon at the end of this. but i'm gonna do it.

quite looking forward to tomorrow. having buffet lunch at mbs with my darl's parents, followed by thor w her and 2 of my closest friends. kinda weird to be enjoying so much on a thursday. and i'm gonna ah-bengify my hair a few days from now! blond hair. hahahaha wonder how i'll look. wish me luck.

good night world.

we hate to MOVE IT, MOVE IT.
and yet another opening article adapted from the story of Twilight and the Thousand Other Fantasy Stories. in this latest article, humour (or rumour) has it that vampires drink orange juice. a petrified employee of orange julius was quoted saying "he just looked at me with those orange eyes, and then, i had no choice. i gave him a cup of orange!". orange julius CEO said that he was launching a personal vendetta against vampires as they were causing his profits to dip.

two <br /> spacings above and below

this linking passage links us to linkin park which is somewhere in my CD rack. "what a nice park," leonardo da vinci had said himself. "its full of dog shit and... eww whats this? spagetthi filled with pieces of dark flakes... ooo, wait, senor! its... chocolate. si si... si penne? no no... si fusilli." pavarotti reportedly slapped him after that for mixing up his favourite pasta.
